Istituto Cardiocentro Ticino
Location: Lugano
Year: 2023-2026
The EOC’s need to expand the heart centre, in order to adapt the availability of space to the demands and evolution of modern medicine, required the study of this project, which is currently underway.
With the elevation, the building finds the completion of its volume and assumes a more consonant relationship with the tower of the “Civico” while conferring a volumetry and architecture that integrates perfectly with the existing building.
The two floors relating to in-patient care will have 28 new rooms and around 50 beds. This will be complemented by the necessary accompanying nursing spaces, plus around twenty administrative and medical spaces.
It is deliberately a functional floor plan that develops around the existing large internal patio, the true qualifying element of the entire building.
The central concrete service body, containing the vertical service connections and passageways for the technical infrastructure, also serves as a seismic stabilising element of the building.
Of particular importance is the central location of the nursing area, which allows, through large windows, a privileged visual contact on the lift landing and the movement of people. A condition greatly appreciated by the nursing staff.
The top floor is set back from the edge of the façades and is partially destined as a canteen/restaurant.
The dining room is completely glazed in order to allow a privileged view of the City and the gulf of Lugano. The outdoor terrace/garden extends and completes the possibility of using and managing the restaurant service during the warm season.
A separate, discreet indoor and outdoor area is intended for the recreation of patients after their operations.
Finally, the new connection between the “tower” building and the Cardiocentro acts as a glue for the entire hospital system, further reinforcing the concept of cohesion according to the new directions of the large healthcare facility.
